Anatomy of a t-shirt quilt

These photos show how sleeve designs and smaller logos are appliquéd onto the main block of the t-shirt. In the photo on the left, Duke MBA Games is a small patch from the front of the shirt that has been appliquéd onto the main block. In the photo on the right, the gecko from a sleeve has been stitched into the upper left corner of the main block to make one block.

What parts of the shirt will be used?

You can use one design from the shirt or both front and back designs. Smaller designs from sleeves, pockets, or the upper chest area will be incorporated into the larger block when possible (see examples above).

The maximum block size is 14 inches. If the t-shirt imprint is larger, some of it will be cut off. However, every effort is made to preserve the writing and message of the imprint.

You must send us the whole shirt. It should be freshly washed, dried, and folded before sending it to us.

What if my t-shirt is stained or torn?

We will also make needed repairs to your t-shirts for small holes/tears. These repairs will show. No attempt is made to remove stains. Sometimes they add character to the quilt. If you want the stains removed, please do so before sending to us. If a shirt cannot be used because it is too thin or not repairable, we will discuss with you before making the quilt.

This is an example of a t-shirt where the number is completely worn off, but the shirt is still usable:

How do you determine the number of blocks?

Each complete block counts as one t-shirt. If there are an odd number of designs, we will try to combine them into an even number. If that is not possible, we will add quilt blocks as needed that are complementary to the shirts that are provided. The charges for the quilt will include the total number of blocks that make up the quilt.

What is included in the cost of the quilt?

The entire quilt, materials, design, all sewing/quilting, and shipping (if needed) are included in the costs.

What kind of materials do you use to make the quilt besides t-shirts?

Materials that will go into your quilt include background fabric, stabilizer, repair materials, fabric backing, batting, and thread. Only the best quality quilt fabric is used. All fabric is 100% cotton unless you specify otherwise. Our preference is to use batik fabrics for the background because of its durability, high thread count, and versatile color palettes. Non-batik high quality quilt fabrics are used when needed for the desired color scheme. Background fabric is chosen to coordinate with the shirts provided. For example, a school t-shirt quilt would use background fabrics in the school colors. You can also select a specific color if you have a preference.

How is the quilt made?

Each shirt is stabilized with a soft, knit fusible backing. The fabric on the back of the quilt will be soft 100% cotton in a light color that coordinates with the front of the quilt. The quilt binding is machine stitched.

The quilt batting (the stuffing in the middle) is a soft 100% cotton or a cotton/polyester blend based on your preference. Your quilt is quilted using a hand-guided long-arm quilting machine and a soft, clear 100% polyester thread. The polyester thread is durable and works well with dark and light colors. If you prefer 100% cotton thread, we will use a long-staple Egyptian cotton thread. The picture below shows a typical quilting design.

Standard t-shirt Quilt Designs

Style A: This is a standard quilt layout. The number of blocks will vary based on the number of t-shirts. Style B: This layout uses an equal number of light and dark colored t-shirts. Style C: This layout uses less than 12 t-shirts and is ideal when you want only a few t-shirts in a quilt.

Notes:
1. We are not able to use heavy sweatshirts or other very heavy materials such as denim in a quilt.
2. We do not accept or make quilts with imprints containing profanity or adult content.
